What's Happening in Holy Trinity

DAVID CASSIDY AND HIS WEST ORANGE ROOTS THAT RUN DEEP

1/4/2024

On November 21, 2017, David Cassidy, former teen idol and 1970s pop star passed away at age 67. Cassidy grew up in West Orange, New Jersey, before achieving widespread acclaim and fame. The residents of West Orange still remember David Cassidy as a hometown boy, one of their own, with deep roots in that town.
Those roots go far back to the ancestors of his mother Evelyn Ward, who were partly responsible for founding the city of Newark. Evelyn came from that group of Irish and Swiss colonial Americans seeking religious freedom. According to history, the first person given the privilege of coming ashore was Elizabeth Swaine, the daughter of Captain Samuel Swaine, and new bride of Josiah Ward. Ensuing generations remained in what would become Essex County. The Ward family tree eventually lead to Frederick Ward, descendant of Josiah and Elizabeth Ward (née Swaine). On May 21, 1923, Ward's wife Ethel Laurinda (née Wheeler) gave birth to their daughter Evelyn in West Orange. The Wards bought their house on Elm Street in 1919.
Evelyn Ward moved from West Orange to New York City, and became an actress, making her Broadway debut in 1943. In 1945, she married actor Jack Cassidy and had their son David Bruce Cassidy, who was born in 1950 at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital New York. They were frequently on the road touring as actors and young David spent his early years with his maternal grandparents on Elm Street in West Orange. The marriage of Jack Cassidy and Evelyn Ward eventually ended in divorce. Evelyn moved back to West Orange with David and there he remained in West Orange with his mother at the Elm Street home of his grandfather, Fred Ward.

HOLY TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY
David’s grandmother, Ethel, was the pianist and soloist in the senior choir of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in West Orange, and David was the lead soloist in the junior choir for seven to nine years old children. He also attended Bible School regularly.  David, recognizing the great religious influence in his life, was quoted as saying:
“It probably was subconsciously something that ~ that later on in life as I went through becoming extremely successful early on ~ helped me to stay grounded “

His mother Evelyn always knew that David wanted to be a singer and actor, even as early as 4 years old.  David would sneak into her bedroom and sing his mom to sleep and sing to wake her up. David started school in kindergarten at age five right through to fifth grade in West Orange, until he left West Orange as a teenager to live with his father in Los Angles, where he eventually landed the role as Keith Partridge in the 1970s hit show “The Partridge Family”. By a stroke of fate, his TV mom, the actress Shirley Jones, was his real-life stepmother. David thought the world of his grandfather Fred, who he said was the finest man he had ever known and was more of a father to him than his own father Jack Cassidy. David had wonderful memories of my family, and his childhood time in West Orange. Later in David’s career he would do concerts in Atlantic City, New Brunswick at the State Theatre, as well as at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank in 2016. David had great affection for his childhood home and church. It made him very happy to revisit and he held his ancestral heritage in great esteem. His family roots were very special to him.

As a very special tribute in honor and in memory of David Cassidy and his boy-hood roots in West Orange, New Jersey, we have been given permission by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church to plant a yellow hybrid Tea Cassidy Rose in the garden at the front of the church with a plaque dedicated to his beloved memory.
Our deepest thanks to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the Reverend Miguel A. Hernandez for allowing us to do this tribute in honor of David in his home town of West Orange, New Jersey, USA

We at the Cassidy Rose are very grateful that the Church graciously agreed to allow us to plant Roses in the Church Grounds in memory of one of their former Choir Boys and international Mega Star Mr David Bruce Cassidy , His roots in West Orange will be remembered for many year to come . Also the joy he brought to generations of devoted followers globally will not be forgotten. He was a phenomenon ,a force of nature a talented and caring man. . He left this world far too soon, I can’t think of anywhere more appropriate than having this tribute in his hometown ,where he had probably the happiest days of his life ,before the fame .
Thank You very much for allowing this tribute
We his friends and Fans appreciate it greatly.

Thank you for honoring David's memory and faith with this tribute. David was a shooting star who lit up the sky brightly for a short time, before he was taken home to Heaven.

May he rest in eternal peace and grace. We are grateful that his music remains with us to enjoy and to bring back the nostalgia of what those wonderful pop songs meant to our youth.

God bless you,

Camellia… Such a heartfelt tribute to a great artist, performer and humble man. Others have written beautiful comments, but I found yours to capture fully the person of David Cassidy. He was more than an artist. Cassidy was a man who cared about others and touched their souls. From all accounts, David was genuinely an extraordinary man.

David Bruce Cassidy was a gift to us all. A good physical comedic actor and a great dramatic actor. David was a self taught pianist, drummer, guitarist and songwriter. His voice was phenominal. Matched by no one to this day. David's live concert performances between 1971 and 1975 an exciting part of music history. David's love for his dogs and horses showed his sensetivity and compassion; and David's cheritable work throughout the years brought light and love to so many. I saw David perform live in 1972, and again in 1996 in Blood Brothers. Something I will share that David said to me was "God Bless You". I will remember David with love today on would have been his 75th Birthday and always. He changed my life!

David was a beautifully, talented, intelligent compassionate soul. He brought a lot of joy to a lot of people throughout his life. I think it’s wonderful that he is being remembered in his childhood church where he sang in the choir as a boy . It’s a lovely kind gesture that roses are planted here in his memory to honor him . David said himself if you want to support me be kind .

A man of exceptional talent a phenomenon, a voice like no other .
He was extremely kind and went out of his way help , not just myself but many many others. These good deeds get overlooked by his reputation and mega star persona .
There was so much more to him than the bad boy of pop image . He adored his Wife and son and extended family. Although he felt many times like he was public property.
His fame was also his curse.
He left a lasting impression on a whole generation of people who will never forget him . His music is timeless his voice matured into a warm mellow baratone . As appealing as quality chocolate. . I am and always be eternally grateful for his kindness and friendship at the worst time in my life. I hope he’s found in heaven what eluded him on earth . Always Kid Always

I've been a fan of David Cassidy since I was 10/11 years old. I am 64 now. I saw him at Wembley Empire Pool in March 1973. I've seen him in the 2000s too he gave everything of himself to his fans.
Unfortunately I never got to meet him but feel like I knew him. I feel we would have been good friends if we'd met. He was the best and I will never forget him. The Yellow Roses are very fitting and are meant to mean friendship 💛 They are also my favourite flower. All my love always from the UK 🇬🇧

I had the opportunity to see David both in concert and on the stage (Blood Brothers). While he had, like all of us, his personal struggles, his joy was contagious and his desire to bring happiness, genuine. His beautiful voice graced our era and defined a time that will never be experienced again. Even now, his memory brings back the joy of our youth. I can’t help but think that God is still really enjoying that voice. Thanks David.

I think it's wonderful that Camellia Hoare, Sian Harries, and others have made this fine memorial to David possible. He brought a lot of happiness to fans and friends. And, as he made clear when we visited West Orange, he remembered his home town warmly. He said he was happier there, in his formative years--as an unknown "regular kid," playing in the woods and so on--than he was later, during the peak years of his popularity as a TV star/recording star/pop idol in the 1970s

I am so grateful for what you all do to honor the memory of David. And thank you to the church for also giving space for that. David meant a lot to me in my younger years and his music still does today. From what I understand, he gave a lot of himself to others. But he was also a human being like the rest of us, with a lot of faults and shortcomings. I will still always love and remember him. And I thank Jesus for him and I pray that he now gets to sing praises together with all those who have gone before us

Reflecting on David Cassidy being Honoured in West Orange on the 30/31st July by his children and fans his children spoke two lovely tributes of Love to their Father honouring his memory
The Tributes of Love shared by Katie and Beau Cassidy for their father David Cassidy ~ I Love this Image ❣️
Katie said “ My father had a huge, huge, heart , and was an incredible person.
Beau said “ He was my little league coach, now I get to be on his little league field”
Their speeches were simple , emotional and spoke to straight to the heart. They both were incredibly moved and emotional by the out pouring of Love from the Fans and the West Orange community with the Love and Affection that was held for David.
It was evident for all to see just how loved and respected he was and how happy fans were to see his children family and close friends turn out for this occasion to honour him in his childhood hometown.

The Gift Of Giving 🩵🦋🩵
It is better to give than receive, but the greatest gift of all is the willingness to receive from others with gratitude and an open heart. If we can't learn to graciously receive, how else can others all experience the joy of Giving ?…..
